Film-maker and accidental holistic cook, Shaana Levy-Bahl returns to our Kitchen Inspiration series with yet another paleo recipe, this time for tahini and chocolate brownies!
For the unfamiliar, a paleo diet is one which eliminates processed foods, refined sugar, gluten, grains, dairy, legumes and nightshade vegetables in favour of real foods with naturally-occurring and nutrient-dense components. Think lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
Made with ground sesame seeds, tahini is one of those ingredients which often pop up as part of paleo living, not least as it’s an excellent source of calcium and other essential vitamins and minerals from copper and zinc to vitamin B1 and dietary fiber. Here creamy yet oh-so-nutty tahini is the starring ingredient in craveably-chocolatey brownies. It’s an easy recipe which ticks all the right boxes for a paleo diet: flourless, gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free and above all, deliciously-healthy!
Paleo Tahini & Chocolate Brownies
- 1½ cups tahini
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup coconut sugar
- ⅓ cup 100% maple syrup (add 2 tbsp more if you want them sweeter)
- ½ cup unsweetened cacao powder (you can add a bit more if you want them extra dark)
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- Preheat oven to 180C.
- Prepare an 8×8 pan by lining it with parchment paper, greasing it well.
- In a bowl, stir together tahini, eggs, maple syrup and vanilla extract.
- Add cacao powder, baking soda, pink salt and stir until a batter is formed. Slowly fold in the chocolate chips.
- Bake the brownies for 25 minutes. Allow to cool completely before serving and then enjoy!
