There are few things more comforting than a steam-billowing apple crumble just out of the oven, with caramelised bubbles escaping those beautiful golden brown tops. The combination of the soft and tender apples, paired with a crumbly buttery topping is simply heavenly. You can definitely enjoy your apple crumble as is, or go the extra mile, pairing it with creamy custard and scoop of ice cream for the ultimate cosy treat!
Quick & Delicious Apple Crumble

- For the Apples: Start by dicing a few apples into large cubes. In a pan, melt a generous amount of butter and add the apples, stirring them as they cook. To enhance the sweetness and balance the flavor, add a splash of lemon juice and a few tablespoons of brown sugar or jaggery. If you prefer your apples with a little bite, avoid overcooking them—just soften them enough to release their natural sweetness.
- For the Crumble Topping: In a large bowl, whisk together flour and your choice of brown sugar or coconut sugar. Then, add softened butter and use your fingers to work it into the dry ingredients until it forms a crumbly texture. This topping is what will give your crumble that perfect, golden crunch.
- For the Custard: To make a quick, creamy custard, gently heat a cup of milk and whisk in instant custard powder along with a touch of sugar. Stir it over medium-low heat until it thickens to a pourable consistency. If it gets too thick, just add a splash of milk to loosen it up.
- Assembling and Baking the Crumble: Preheat your oven to 180°C. In a baking dish (or individual ramekins if you prefer), layer the softened apples on the bottom and evenly spread the crumble topping over them. Pop it into the oven and bake until the top is golden and bubbling with caramelized goodness.
Serve the apple crumble hot, with custard and a scoop of ice cream on the side for an extra indulgent touch. It’s a simple, yet irresistibly cozy dessert that will keep you warm all season long!
