Vienna Diaries: A Stay at the Intercontinental

I’m one of those people for whom a holiday is as much about the hotel as the city.

Convenience and comfort are essential, while a touch of luxury is never amiss. Above all though, I crave the feeling of returning to a home-away-from-home at the end of a long day out exploring…

Well, my recent stay at the InterContinental in Vienna effortlessly ticked all these boxes – laying the groundwork for an idyllic break in this beautiful European city!

Standing tall in the heart of Vienna, the hotel is situated right across from the central Stadtpark and within a short stroll of Vienna’s main attractions.

It’s been built in a style characteristic of the late fifties/ early sixties, with an angular marbled façade leading into a grand lobby, replete with elegant chandeliers and a stylish bar…

The setting is imbued with a sense of old-world glamour – which is quite fitting really, as the InterContinental Vienna was famously frequented by the international jet set back in the day!

Seeing as this was a girls trip, a spacious studio suite suited our purpose rather nicely with its own hallway, a walk-in-wardrobe and a dedicated seating area apt for curling up in, as we chatted over a cuppa!

Our room came with all the basic necessities of course (right down to a handy coffee machine), but it was the little treats left behind by the housekeeping team each day that added a thoughtful touch… from fresh fruit to classic Viennese almond chocolates, they had our cravings completely covered.

We also had access to Club InterContinental and ended up spending a fair amount of time in this inviting lounge tucked away on the the twelfth floor of the hotel…

The quiet and unassuming space was the ideal spot for starting our day on an unhurried note.

I loved the  well-balanced breakfast spread put out each morning, as I’m never one to miss a hotel brekky, but was all-too-conscious of the heaps of indulgence that I’d meticulously packed into our food-centric itinerary!

The Club also offered complimentary snacks throughout the day from delicate canapés to a moreish selection of cheese, which we generously helped ourselves to.

And there were plenty of libations to help wash it all down as well…

… Not to mention the sweeping views of Vienna to drink in!

Speaking of evening tipples, the girls and I really enjoyed our pre-dinner drinks at Intermezzo too – the hotel’s vintage American bar, which is reminiscent of the charm and glamour of the early sixties…

From the dazzling chandelier glittering above the bar (we were told it’s been preserved in its original condition!) to the dapper bartenders donning white tuxedos and the live pianist who set such an elegant tone to the ambience… the entire experience certainly made for a stylish start to our evening.

We kicked things off with champagne and yet more cheese, whetting our appetite with a light, buttery bite of burrata served on a sharp tomato tartare, alongside warm and utterly irresistible bread rolls…

… Before then moving on to Parlor at the hotel for dinner.

The living room concept embodied in the restaurant’s design offered the perfect respite for our tired souls after our long day of travelling and exploring.

While the hearty and wholesome fare provided just the nourishment we were craving!

But do you know which part about our stay at InterContinental Vienna, I really liked the most?

The incredibly friendly and approachable team at the hotel, right from the pleasant housekeeping team to the concierge, Thomas Crampton, a proud Austrian whom we saw go above and beyond to ensure that all of the hotel’s guests leave with an urge to revisit this alluring city…

It’s safe to say, that he certainly succeeded  in our case!

And if you’re interested in what we did when we weren’t eating, I’ve also written about the cultural highlights of our visit, here.

I booked my stay at InterContinental Vienna independently but was offered a complimentary upgrade and access to Club InterContinental, as well as being hosted for dinner and drinks. As always though, all opinions expressed are my own.

I loved this hotel and possibly one of my favourite Intercontinental hotels and I’ve stayed in a few! We had such a great experience and the folks running the Club Lounge were fantastic with my gluten free food.
Glad you had a great time at the hotel also!
