Bombay Diaries: The Ice Cream Sandwiches you Need to Try…

My love affair with ice cream sandwiches began long before my discovery last summer of the macaron hybrids found at Yolkin’s pop-ups in London.

Rather, it dates back to a childhood in Bombay – of summers spent scoffing down Havmor’s iconic ice cream biscuits and those luscious slabs found at K Rustom’s (the Parsi institution helping the city to cool its heels since 1953)… The addiction has only been further fuelled with the latest arrivals on the sugary scene – doughwich or wafflewich anyone?

And with a soaring summer right around the corner, it seems like the perfect occasion to round up the best ice cream sammiches to help #BeatTheHeat…

K Rustom’s

… Starting with the basics.

Because this small ice cream parlour in Churchgate is about as basic as it gets… fans whirring overhead and a few metal freezers loaded with ice creams in the most moreish of flavours – you know it’s the real deal when walnut crunch has chunks of caramelised walnut poking out, while fruit pulp and fruity bits permeate from the seasonal fruit flavours!

Run by an old-school Parsi family, K Rustom’s may have been in business for over half a century but it’s fabulously on-point with its creative specials too – adventurous additions of late include a strong but beautifully textured paan ice cream!

The only tough part is choosing between all those enticing flavours, before the creamy rectangular ice cream slab is slapped in between two wafer-thin biscuits… And when in doubt, it’s always a good idea to get them all!

Belgian Waffle Co

But if you’d like a bit more crunch  to your sammich, then the waff-wich at Bombay’s Belgian Waffle Company might be more up your alley.

Vanilla (or chocolate) ice cream packed between crisp, perfectly golden waffles, a generous drizzle of chocolate sauce on top for good measure.

Yes, it tastes every bit as scrumptious as it looks and sounds. On that related note, can we also agree that the only reason we really like hashtags is because they look like waffles?

Papacream

Of course if you really want to go all out, then might I suggest the jumbo dougwich at Papacream – the father of the wildest nitrogen ice cream-based concoctions!

A homemade doughnut layered with smooth Belgian chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, Oreos, fudge and caramel sauce, with some dipping chocolate for good measure too… It’s definitely a sandwich like never before! Monstrously good.

Havmor

And let’s not forget this classic from Havmor – available at a kirana store near you.

A thick chunk of the creamiest vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two crumbly chocolate biscuits which are so bad, they’re actually good. It’s practically a summer essential to have one (or a few) conveniently lying around in your freezer!

The great thing about all of the above is that they’re just begging to be tried at home though! But if you insist, I’ll hunt down the best alternatives right here in London, now that I am back 🙂 xx

Omg – that doughnut one looks almost criminal but would just absolutely hit the spot for a serious treat fest! I’ve still not tried the yolkin pop up would you believe?!
