Bombay Diaries: Brunch Life at The Table

It’s no secret that I have a fairly healthy obsession with the Table, the globally inspired, San Francisco-style eatery in Colaba… and with much good reason too, from Chef Alex Sanchez’s eclectic menu to the charming ambience and flawless service.

Well now I have yet another.

The sacred institution that is Sunday brunch.

I should confess that I’m nothing if not a creature of habit… and so when I arrived on this most recent visit, I took my usual spot by the head of the long community table, all ready to tuck into a Sobo salad (a  vibrant mix of grains, greens, avocado and feta cheese) among other usual suspects such as the aubergine miso (the best I’ve had in Bombay) and broccoli tacos (you gotta try it to believe it).

Hence my initial reaction at seeing the totally different brunch menu was one of utter confusion – much to the amusement of the restaurant’s hostess and staff who by now are all-too-well versed with my favourites!

But while there were none of the familiar plates that I usually reach for, there was plenty else to whet our appetites with an extensive mix of dishes taking their cue from a true Californian-style brunch, each option oozing weekend decadence by the sounds of it.

The confusion heightened – how were we to choose?

The breakfast pastries seemed like a good place to start, especially once we were told that they change weekly and so we’ll never find the same one here twice!

The day’s special featured an exquisite pistachio Mont Blanc, it’s moist and crumbly frangipane base giving way to a tart raspberry filling that was well balanced by the zesty layers of pistachio cream on top. It was quite easy on the eyes too…

It was then on to an #EggPorn sort of situation with black truffle-scrambled eggs on sourdough toast (it was as rich as it looks and sounds) and a thrilling spin on Eggs Benedict, which saw two perfectly poached eggs sitting lightly on a generous bed of smashed avocado over crisp yet soft toasted muffins. The real star of the show here were the lashings of chipotle-hollandaise poured across, as the spicy undertones of the chipotle sauce sharply cut through the creamy hollandaise with much panache!

And finally, the stuff of Sunday dreams – not just any old pancake, but a fluffy hybrid between one of my favourite brunch staples and desserts… a tiramisu  cocoa-infused pancake complete with dollops of mascarpone bavarois and coffee meringue shards, surrounded by a necklace of coffee-amaretto syrup! Yep, just dreamy.

Right, I think I should to go and update my earlier ode to pancakes immediately, don’t you? But before I do, it would almost be rude not to share my #DessertDiaries chronicling other sweet memories of the Table from the recent past… Sharing is caring after all. So bon appetit!

Oh wow I’m completely drooling right now and it’s still a few hours until lunch time! I’m like you and usually end up eating my favourites every time I visit somewhere I’ve been before but It’s sometimes good to be made to try other things. And it looks like you were rewarded well with that tiramisu pancake! 😀
